Tyrese Reid of Spot Valley High school is chasing the 30 year-old ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletics Championships record in the Class One 800m.Speaking after Reid had won his 1500m races at the JAAA/Jamalco Development meet at Halse Hall on Saturday, coach Kerron Grant underlined his conviction that his charge can get past the mark set in an iconic Boys Champs race in 1987.The Spot Valley student-athlete established the fastest high school 800m time at 1 minute 53.68 seconds on January 14. At Halse Hall, he also won his 1500m heat on 4 minutes 12.54 seconds and Grant assessed that run, saying: “His first 700m was behind what we expected but he complained about getting caught in the pack but that can be worked so nothing to worry about.”The fastest Class One 1500m run of the meet came from Tahjay Wilson of Bellefield, who looked comfortable in an effort that took 4 minutes 09.74 seconds in another heat.SHOW OF SPEEDReid finished the day with a show of his speed. He produced the second fastest Class One 400m time of the day at 50.91 seconds on the Halse Hall grass. The best circuit was crafted by Agerian Jackson of Christiana High in 50.29 seconds.Coach Grant explained that the Spot Valley standout is doing well in training.”He’s responding good to the work and he knows what we want to achieve for the season,” said Grant.Reid’s training programme is designed to bring him to peak performance at Champs, which starts on March 28.”Based on where he’s at now, he has another two weeks before his programme changes so he should be in at least 3.58, 3.57 shape by Champs,” Grant programmed. “That’s where we’re planning to be and for the 800m, we’re trying to get him to 1.48.”Informed that the Champs record has stood at 1 minute 48.84 seconds to Sherwin Burgess of Vere Technical since 1987, Grant calmly replied, “Well definitely, that’s why we’re chasing it because we have what it takes to do it.”That epic Champs race saw four boys break 1 minute 50 seconds, with Burgess edging Kenroy Levy of STETHS 1.48.84 to 1.48.86 with two others Fitzroy Morrison of STETHS and Mark Jones of Vere also under 1.50. The last Champs Class One final with a time that fast took place in 1990. Clevon Clair of Jamaica College won in 1 minute 49.51 seconds ahead of Michael Williams of St Jago High School whose time was 1 minute 49.96 seconds.
