Kotoko to challenge Ghana FA DC decision

first_imgAsante Kotoko are crying foul over the decision by the Ghana FA’s Disciplinary Committee to uphold the protest of Hearts of Oak against them over the eligibility of striker Obed Owusu in their Week 25 Premier League fixture.Reacting to decision, Kotoko’s Greater Accra Regional rep, Edmund Ackah, claims the ruling was made on Thursday before being released on Tuesday.According to Ackah, the PRO of Hearts of Oak, Opare Addo had hinted that the Accra club had already been handed a favourable verdict.“We totally reject the ruling because it has no basis whatsoever. We will go to every length to challenge it and insist that the right is done,”  Ackah said.Hearts complaint said that Obed Owusu’s ineligibility stemmed from attracting four yellow cards in the following matches: Aduana vs Kotoko on match day 1, Ashgold vs Kotoko on match day 7, Kotoko vs Aduana in the FA Cup and Kotoko vs Ashgold on match day 24. This, the Phobians argued, made the player ineligible to feature against them on match day 25.”I can officially say that Kotoko is putting up all the documents needed for them to appeal against the decision made by Ethics Committee at the court.”  “Approach Opare Addo and ask him if a radio presenter did call him on Thursday for him to say the points have been given to Hearts and that they are only waiting for the DC to write to them to that effect.””Ask Opare who told him that. We are aware that someone called him and he said somebody from the Ethics Committee had told him. So who told him?” Ackah fumed with rage on Asempa FM on Wednesday.“Officially we are not happy of this ruling made by the Disciplinary Committee. Kumasi Asante Kotoko still have the right to file an appeal against the ruling made by the Disciplinary Committee of GFA.”Kotoko were, as a result of the ruling, six points poorer.– Follow Joy Sports on Twitter: @Joy997FM. Ronaldo vs Lewandowski kicks off Euro quarter finals

first_imgMarseille, France | AFP |The Euro 2016 quarter finals start Thursday with Cristiano Ronaldo seeking a new step towards his first international title when Portugal take on Poland in Marseille. In the battle of Europe’s top strikers, Poland will be counting on Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski to deaden the Ronaldo threat by scoring his first goal in the tournament. The match starts four days of tense and historic encounters which will see Germany seeking a first win at a major tournament against Italy, Wales playing for British honour against Belgium and France face giantkillers Iceland.Poland and Portugal, whose game starts at 1900 GMT, have both underachieved at Euros and the World Cup and both now have a golden opportunity to make a name on international level. The winner will face Belgium or Wales in the semi-final avoiding the favoured heavyweights.Portugal’s coach Fernando Santos said neither side should be confident. “There is no favourite, it is 50-50.”Much focus will be on Ronaldo, a regular match-winner for Real Madrid who has never enjoyed success with Portugal. But the 31-year-old is just one goal away from more European history by matching French legend Michel Platini’s record mark of nine goals in the Euro finals. He is already the first player to score in four Euros.Santos said the superstar can handle the expectations.“It is a natural thing some are mentioned more than others because they are amazing players. Ronaldo knows how to deal with that,” said Santos. Injury concernsLewandowski got the most goals of any player in qualifying for the finals. But he has not scored in four games in France. Poland must thank its powerful defence for much of its success at Euro 2016.Poland coach Adam Nawalka insists he still has full confidence in Lewandowski. But he is also wating for Ajax Amsterdam striker Arkadiusz Milik to come good for Poland.Milik said he has tried to learn from Ronaldo. “It will be special for me to play against him tomorrow, but of course I will try to focus on my team instead of looking up to him.”Portugal have fitness concerns over Raphael Guerreiro, Andre Gomes and Joao Moutinho, so 18-year-old Renato Sanches could start for the first time in the tournament.Sanches showed why German giants Bayern Munich paid Benfica 35 million euros ($38 million) for his services as he came off the bench to win man-of-the-match in the last 16 victory against Croatia. However, Santos said: “He only started working with us in March. He is still growing and it is up to me to analyse and decide if he can be useful for the team.”The match is followed by Wales against Belgium in Lille on Friday. The stadium could be dominated by Belgian fans who are expected to flood across the nearby border for the day.World champions Germany play Italy, with their powerful defence, in Bordeaux on Saturday hoping to end a run of eight defeats by their opponents in major tournaments.Iceland are looking to put pressure on another major European side when they take on hosts France at the Stade de France on Sunday.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

Community effort set to get Ballyshannon ticking again with new clock face

first_imgMovie-goers might recall that line from Back to the Future when, on November 12, 1955, lightning struck the clock tower providing enough power — 1.21 gigawatts, in case you forgot —  to send Marty McFly and the DeLorean back to the future to 1985.But, in Ballyshannon, it’s not time travel that interests the local regeneration group. They are in the midst of installing a new town clock in the south Donegal area following a huge community drive. Following a lightning strike of their own in 2014, the old clock was damaged beyond repair, prompting a south Donegal regeneration group to take matters into their own hands.Several community fundraisers later and enough money was raised for the new clock, a project the Ballyshannon Regeneration Group have been involved with from the beginning.Cllr Barry Sweeney, who is a founding member of the group, told Donegal Daily: “(The clock) was hit by lightning in a storm over six years ago and it has not been fixed since.“Now, a lot of people were talking about fixing it and doing something about it but it was owned by private owners at that stage. “So, we decided to come together and assist in the project and we initially had the idea of a false face at no real cost and we got permission to do that from the owners.“But as time went on, we wondered how much a real face would cost and so we decided to do a bit of fundraising for it.“And over the last two years, we have raised over €14,500 to date,” he added.“And in the meantime, a new owner had bought the building.”The original clock face was built in 1878 when an agreement was struck between the planning authorities and Belfast Bank. The old Ballyshannon clock face was struck by lightning in 2014 leaving it in a state of disrepair. The building was later owned by the Royal Bank before an amalgamation with the Provincial Bank resulted in the Allied Irish Bank forming there in 1966.Local businessman Eamonn McNulty, who now owns the building, purchased the property from the well-known Gallogley family earlier this year.“When a new owner was confirmed, we kind of made the decision to go ahead with the project because there is great value in this project for the community.“We had an opportunity to do something symbolic in the town and we had so many people who had donated,” Sweeney added. “Now, the new owner is doing a lot of the work in terms of getting this project going again and we are working together with him.“But one of the great things about this initiative is that it is all local craftspeople coming together to make it a reality.“And it will be great for the building as well because now it is being cared for and something is going to happen to the building to project and preserve it into the future.“We don’t know yet what form that is going to take because there is plenty of ideas out there, some that are viable and others that are not.“But everybody involved wants the building to be used for something appropriate and meaningful when decided.“As for the clock project, it has taken a lot longer than we hoped but we are nearly there.”Community effort set to get Ballyshannon ticking again with new clock face was last modified: October 8th, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgUpdate: The Seahawks beat the Vikings on Monday night, moving past the 49ers in the NFL West standings.—The 49ers’ exclusive hold on first place in the NFC West the past two months will slip away Monday night unless the Vikings can upset the Seahawks.A Seattle win would not only knock San Francisco out of sole possession of first place for the first time in 64 days, but the 49ers would fall to the No. 5 seed in the NFC playoff chase with four games remaining. Babbage’s Computer May Be Built

first_imgThe “Analytical Engine,” a 19th-century computer conceived by Charles Babbage, may finally be built 140 years after his death.  The remarkable contraption was to be powered by steam and would fill a warehouse, but the eccentric old man could not get the Royal Society to back it.  His idea, 100 years ahead of its time, would be a true general-purpose computer, able to solve any problem expressible in numerical algorithms.  It would take instructions with punched cards, operate a CPU, use memory, and print output, just like early computers in the mid 20th century.  Given the technology and parts available in the mid 19th century, however, it was a dream far in advance of its time.  His son tried but was unable to get the plans off the ground.  Others also attempted the project but failed.    The BBC News reported that interest is growing in bringing the “inspirational piece of equipment” to reality, for its historical interest if not for its ability to compete with modern computers.  “A hundred years ago, before computers were available, [Babbage] had envisaged this machine,” a leader of the effort said.  A real working model would answer “profound historical questions,” a historian of computer technology remarked; “Could there have been an information age in Victorian times?  That is a very interesting question.”  Now, with distributed planning and world-wide cooperation, Babbage’s historic computer might just become a reality.Too bad this contemporary of Darwin did not get his project off the ground.  If the information age had begun in Darwin’s day, perhaps it would have taken the steam out of the idea of random variation producing complexity.  Read our online biography of Charles Babbage – a Christian scholar who would have been comfortable with Intelligent Design theory – for a really entertaining look at a fascinating visionary whose ideas would eventually triumph and change the world.(Visited 8 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0last_img read more

Volunteering to gain work experience

first_imgBelieving that volunteer work is a pathway to self-confidence, building life skills and preparing youngsters for the workplace, Lisa Garson initiated Action Volunteer Africa (AVA) in Cape Town in January 2012.Youngsters who sign up with AVA go through a three-day orientation course focusing on topics such as volunteer orientation, expectations, active citizenry, personal awareness and diversity sensitivityGarson, a former human resources manager, and director at volunteer recruitment agency Action Appointments, believes that placing youth volunteers in non-profit organisations (NGOs) helps them gain skills and strengthen the society in which they live. She says, “Most of the kids we work with are from poor backgrounds and each of them have big dreams, however due to their current state they either find it hard to excel with their education or find a job, so we give them the opportunity to gain working experience and improve their ability in job hunting or, for some, finding their creative side.”She adds, “We want to motivate our youth to volunteer in places that teach you how to be that kind, giving person and although it may be hard for some of them to keep up or continue work with no pay we have programmes that help us generate an interest for them to keep coming back.”SUPPORTIVE PROGRAMMESYoungsters who sign up with AVA go through a three-day orientation course focusing on topics such as volunteer orientation, expectations, active citizenry, personal awareness and diversity sensitivity. They must be available to devote at least six months to a volunteer post, receiving only a monthly transport allowance.Volunteers are then supported by monthly motivation forums for feedback and reflection sessions. The NGOs they sign up with commit to training and supervising them.Lisa Garson believes that placing youth volunteers in non-profit organisations helps them gain skills and strengthen society (Images: AVA Facebook page)On the programmes, Garson says, “How wonderful it is to see a young mind bring out their creative side as during these programmes we get them to work on some art such as painting or playing with clay.“We also have them recite poems or write letters which they will later read out loud.”In the forums guest facilitators also help the volunteers through discussions on asset development and saving, community participation, emotional intelligence, personal branding and using social media for communication. The AVA 2013 programme recruited 30 volunteers; successful volunteers are those who want to help others, take responsibility for their future success and who have a willingness to learn through service.“I have noticed in my life that sustained volunteering is one of the best ways to help young adults grow from their personality, making them aware of the social issues within their community,” said Garson.“We can’t however pay our recruits but we do make sure that they get to work every time with the small transport allowance that we give them although we wish we could do more.”Through their volunteering, recruits have a chance to find their talents and passion, put work experience on their CVs and develop networks within the fields they volunteer in.PLAY YOUR PARTFor more information, and to assist AVA, email [email protected] or call 021 671 3150.last_img read more
