Photo: Cian ReinhardtTHE three storey landmark building is heavy with histories, artefacts, cabinets of militaria, the residue of posh Limerick estates and collections such as those of House of Armstrong and the House of Carroll.This is Limerick Civic Trust, its work and props at the sprawling organisation’s principal base, Bishops’ Palace on Castle Street.Sign up for the weekly Limerick Post newsletter Sign Up An embroidered dress suit that belonged to Emperor of Spain Joseph Bonaparte –  “one of the most vile and inhumane people who ever lived” – is part of the magnificent lore.In the 21st century Treaty City, the keeper of the dress suit is David O’Brien, chief executive officer of the Trust.In this reclaimed part of King’s Island, Bishops’ Palace fronts the emerging Limerick Military History Museum at St Munchin’s Church, currently being repurposed to have its conversion completed early next year.Active since 1983, the Trust’s  “sole purpose is the improve the environment we live in, which is a very big remit if you think about it.“There were civic societies in Ireland before then but not Civic Trusts. We are the first, the oldest and the biggest and most successful,” David  O’Brien states categorically.“For all the negative things that are said about Limerick, when you pull people out of the milieu … you get the best out of them and get the best that Limerick does.“The membership of the Civic  Trust has constantly been there for the executive, taking up the cudgels for what needs to be done and just given it all.”Work undertaken by LCT is categorised across  the environment – architecture, streets and heritage; and the education and cultural environment.“The example of that is our lecture series every year. It is designed and directed towards bringing people into Limerick to talk to us, not talking to ourselves, on key subjects and issues that will impact on the environment.”Members have welcomed past speakers such as Web Summit’s Paddy Cosgrave; prominent peacekeeper Colm Doyle and top European urban planner Peter Bishop.Autumn 2019’s series will be held in St Munchin’s Church, Kings Island. “Our opening speaker this year should be Richard Thornhill, deputy editor of The Financial Times. He will be moderated by an old friend of the Trust, Quentin Peel, formerly of Chatham House.”The urbane O’Brien invokes the duty to “gather, protect and hoard… the papers and documents that support Irish history.“The great tragedy of Irish history is the pages that are often torn out and what we try to do is put them back in where we can.“The beauty about Irish history is that there is no black and white. We have a fantastic kaleidoscope of colour and to see a black and white history of ‘us and them’ is to deny yourself the opportunity to know the facts.”The various missions of Limerick Civic Trust go back to the late, great Denis Leonard as founding executive. He got together with Seamus Gubbins, Paddy Hoare and others to buy The Bishops’ Palace, then a derelict home that the Council wanted knocked, for £1000 punts. They set up shop.“This place was roofless” and now, gracious floors are weighted with cultural riches. The building formerly known as Culture House will be leased to LCT for a €1 annually by Limerick Council.Working on these current projects are 75 people, “69 individuals on the Community  Employment Scheme, the backbone of LCT, the Trust’s heroes.” Supervisors, administration and management make up the numbers.It’s a tight ship. Nearby, there is much laughter and storytelling going on in the Church worked by experienced artisans.“Our CES workers are here, not as an alternative to being unemployed but because this is what they want to do. They don’t want to sit at home watching ‘Oprah’.”There are smaller teams at Limerick FC grooming Markets Field, more at the three bridges, others on the Wetlands.How is the Trust funded?“We have 150 contributing members who give whatever they can and 300 full members who pay and who are asked to contribute to different things. People give what they can and longer serving members give an awful lot more, their time and expertise to committees and so on.”“We have far too little funding, there is never enough.” His point is made time and time again as the organisation is active in multiples such as the maintenance on 14 historic graveyards, the Milk and Potato Markets,  St Patrick’s Festival, Team Cleanup Limerick, Markets Field and street by street power-hosing weekly.More than 30 volunteers are core to works and donations are essential at https://www.limerickcivictrust.ie/make-a-donationThe custodian of times pastTHERE is a bugbear: “The proliferation of plaques around town.”David O’Brien wants to introduce specific criteria to ensure that a plaque is imbued with due respect for heritage.He uses the analogy of Keith  Wood’s legacy to explain why.Given his way, the Civic Trust chief executive would erect a plaque for the rugby hero’s carrying of four Englishmen over the line to score a try for his country. His young son would have the plaque put up for Killaloe’s Clarisford Park which Keith has helped develop for sporting and community activities.Ideally, the new terms for a plaque would be?“That someone would be dead for 30 years first. That they would have been born about a 100 years ago or more. And hopefully, that the place where the plaque is sited would have a meaningful connection to them. “Working variously in publishing and print in the 1990s, David O’Brien went on to lead the Scottish Holdings takeover of some of the bastions of local Irish media, including Limerick radio.“It was an awful lot of fun,” he recalled.School was St Michael’s NS, Pery Square and St Munchin’s.Today he has a 21 year-old daughter in Strathclyde University and two children at home in Killaloe.He has the cut of the ‘huntin’, tootin’, fishin’ class about him, bounding up and down Georgian tiers at Bishops’  Palace to showcase the prime collections. Among them are objects from historian James McMahon’s estate, and signed guest books from Dromore Castle: “You would not believe who was staying around Limerick then.”Everything he communicates about Civic Trust and worthy works in progress lights him up, stuff like the donated boxes of military regalia in the attic.Downtime in Limerick?Long pause. “I love the Milk Market. That really is the weekly event, the must-do.” For eating out, “Wood and Bell in Killaloe. I love Sash in Pery Square.”Kitesurfing is a new sports figary.Bringing Limerick history to life is his greater story. At the church/ museum, he tells the story of the only World War artefact given by Britain to Ireland, the winding oak staircase that made with Castleconnell oak, had found itself built in to a Cirencester hospital. Today it is polished eloquence, a hardy survivor supporting history’s joists, as is the case with Limerick Civic Trust. The Beracha, Hardin & Johnson Buy vs. Rent Index is designed to provide guidance to consumers struggling with that choice.The index, conceived by faculty from Florida International and Florida Atlantic universities, compiles data from 23 major metropolitan housing markets and the overall U.S. real estate market, but the data is not current. There is approximately a two-month delay in the availability of data needed to determine the values Those values range between -1 and 1. If the value is 0 or above, conditions support renting. If the value is less than 0, buying is preferred. The further the value is from 0 in either direction, the stronger the suggestion that buying or renting is favored in a given market.The values are reached through a comparison between a consumer who is buying a home and one who is renting a similar home. The factors in the comparisons include rent-to-price ratio, mortgage rates, the expected rate of inflation, real past stock market long-term returns, long-term rent growth and housing price appreciation, maintenance and property tax costs, and average homeowners’ duration between relocations. The objective of the index is to provide consumers with information on the health of housing markets. With this data, more informed decisions can be made.According to the index, most housing markets in the U.S. are nearing a peak in the real estate cycle. Of the 23 metropolitan areas in the index, 13 are slightly to moderately in buy territory, and 10 are slightly to moderately in rent territory. Atlanta, Chicago, and Cincinnati are among the cities in buy territory while Dallas, Denver, and Houston are in rent territory. New Lakers coach Luke Walton stays focused on helping Warriors repeat

When Klay Thompson buried a first quarter 3-pointer, Walton pumped his fist as if banging a gavel. Several possessions later, when Stephen Curry and Draymond Green mucked up a fast-break attempt and caused a turnover, Kerr threw up his hands and looked to Walton for an explanation.A former forward who played for the Lakers from 2003-12 and won a pair of championships with the organization, Walton has declined interviews since the Lakers announced he had been hired to replace Byron Scott. Walton does not want to give the slightest implication that he is at all distracted from the Warriors postseason run.Of course, it’s impossible for Walton to completely ignore his pending responsibilities. He has been talking to candidates to join his coaching staff, including former Lakers assistant Brian Shaw.Assembling a staff is one of the most important Lakers-related tasks facing Walton right now. May is not an especially busy month for the head coach of a non-playoff team. Note that the Lakers did not sign Byron Scott to a contract in 2014 until the end of July. But hiring a lead assistant – Shaw apparently remains Walton’s top choice – would give him a proxy at pre-draft workouts, a fact noted by NBA.com’s David Aldridge this week. Luke Walton stood on the outer edge of the huddle, bending his 6-foot-8 frame to listen as Steve Kerr gave the Golden State Warriors their final pregame instructions.Before Kerr finished, Walton peeled off from the group, and wandered toward center court, where he planted himself to be the last to give Warriors players high-fives and fist bumps as they took the floor for Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals on Wednesday night.Walton has no more than a dozen games left as a Warriors assistant, before this season ends either with a second championship or without, and he officially becomes the next coach of the Lakers.Until that time, Walton remains focused on his job in Oakland, advising Kerr on tactical adjustments, working with players and scrutinizing film. The Warriors are tied 1-1 in the best-of-seven series with the Oklahoma City Thunder, with Game 3 on Sunday.center_img Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak said earlier this month that when he and Walton spoke, it was either early in the morning or late at night so Walton’s days could be “solely committed” to the Warriors.“At this time,” Kupchak said, “if he and I can speak for three or four minutes a day, or text once or twice, that’s a good day.”Walton will be stepping into a whole new dynamic with the Lakers, a young team still light on identity but bursting with potential. The roster is expected to be heavily revamped, and the team, which landed the No. 2 pick in the draft, will eventually need to hold workouts with Brandon Ingram and Ben Simmons.If these things are weighing on Walton, he has masked it well. Even around the colleagues who know him best.“That wouldn’t be Luke,” Fraser said. “I kind of laugh to myself that when he leaves here he’s going … He doesn’t lead you to believe it, but he’s been on the phone with Mitch and doing other things. But he’s pretty focused on finishing this out the right way.”The Warriors, however, have continued to have fun at Walton’s expense.Kerr captains a laid-back operation — into which Walton fits perfectly – and film session meetings often include footage of a Warriors blunder. A team with 73 wins makes just enough for it to be funny.After he was hired April 29, Walton walked into one such meeting during the Warriors second-round series against Portland, settled into his seat and watched as the first four clips were all of the dreadful Lakers.Walton’s new team.“The guys just go bananas,” assistant coach Ron Adams said. “We’re always kidding about that now.”There may have been no better opportunity for such teasing then on Tuesday, with the Warriors in the Western Conference Finals and the Lakers sweating out the draft lottery. The stakes were high. If the Lakers’ pick fell out of the top three, it would be sent to Philadelphia, depriving the Lakers of a much-needed asset.Walton mentioned to Adams that Warriors people should wish him luck. Adams shot back, “You’re a rival of ours. I hope you get the worst pick available.”Shortly before the draft positions were drawn in a hotel ballroom in New York, Warriors vice president of public relations Raymond Ridder sent Walton a text message saying that he had heard the terrible news. The Lakers, he told Walton, had fallen to fourth in the lottery.Walton quickly sent a panicked reply.Wait, what?The next message Walton received from Ridder, in his 14th year as a Warriors executive, was a series of smiling emojis. He’d been duped.Soon after, nearly 3,000 miles away, four pingpong balls were vacuumed, one by one, through the top of a glass drum.The combination of balls numbered 2, 3, 7 and 14 meant the Lakers would not only keep their draft selection in June, but pick second. It was the organization’s first win since Walton came on board.The new coach of the Lakers couldn’t spend much time celebrating, nor being sore over Ridder’s well-time prank.The Warriors had a game the next day.last_img read more
