Thessaloniki suffers water shortages

first_imgA burst pipeline caused severe water shortages to Greece’e second biggest city this week forcing residents to rely on bottled water and a water rotation system to be enacted by supplier EYATH.Reports state that 40% of the city’s supply was affected by a rupture in the Aravissos pipeline. EYATH said that the rupture has now been repaired and expected supply to be restored by yesterday (Saturday). However EYATH President, Yiannis Krestenitis, said that said the problems in water supply will take time, as the water coming through the pipe was still opaque and would not be distributed until its potability improves.Krestenitis went on to say that supply will be interrupted in areas that did not have problems these past few days in order to provide water to the affected areas.A number of schools were forced to close last week though are expected to reopen on Monday.
